Principles & Elements of Design

The Benefits of Year 9 Art where we were made to learn the elements and principles of design and it's been one of the most beneficial theories I've learnt in design.

Principles

Pattern, the repetition of an object, shape or colour

Contrast, is the opposites put next to each-other, highlighting the light and dark or smooth and rough.

Emphasis, puts into focus, there is a sole importance to one element

Balance, similar to pattern however it is more the arrangement of objects, shapes or things within an image. Sizing of them as well

Harmony, is the comfort that things are meant to be where they are, create a coherent whole.

Rhythm & Movement, a recurring item placed strategically along the image to cause your eyes to move with and around the image

Elements

Line, horizontal, straight, thick, thin, vertical.

Shape, 2D shape such as a circle or triangle

Form, 3D shapes, such as cubes or pyramids

Colour, hues, wave lengths of light.

Texture, you can feel the appearance.

Space, negative and positive spaces

Value, much like a gradient, the different lightnesses of colours and shades

Principles and Elements in relation to the assessment/concept

The elements that should be empathised on this project would be colour space and texture. Texture and colour being important for those who are intellectually disabled to help with interactions with the space and the encouragement of creativity. Space is always important for any project, the definition of each space is important as it encourages structure and organisation.

The principles for this project would be to encourage movement, variety, balance and harmony. Where there is movement throughout the space and due to this there should be a variety of spaces but to avoid chaos in these spaces balance and harmony will be brought in to ensure that the spaces do not overwhelm those who are sing the space.
