Week 5 Content - covering disability, the NDIS and the role of design in relation to exclusion, separation, integration and inclusion

Disability in Australia
Is in relation to what a person can do – been affected for over 6 months
Design can either Improve or actually get in the way. I found this interesting as design is meant to help and not hinder. however after my interview I had a better understanding of how design can actually get in the way where the interviewee says that the space was not design for those who are going to be using it
Disability increases the likelihood of experiencing social inequality.
Exclusion is not a physical exclusion like a wall but an embodied exclusion. However there are High stakes of promoting inclusion - the principle of justice
"To have the 'capability' there needs to be a 'fit' between individuals and their environment"
There are 2 Levels of the NDIS
1. funding and support services for people with permanent and significant disability
2. through the information, linkages and capacity building program (ILC) – facilitation and support for all people with disabilities to fulfil their potential in communities and organisations.
I liked the National Disability strategy which is "the need for universal design". It is important for design in this modern day and age to be universal and suitable for all whether they have a disability or not.
With this there are 8 Goals of Universal design
body fit
comfort
awareness
understanding
wellness
social integration
personnalisation
cultural appropriateness
